Whichever way, concrete surfaces with issues need to be attended to immediately before it gets worse. Here are the top 5 tips and tricks anyone needs to know about when it comes to concrete repair: 1. Know the Cause of the DamageIt is never a good thing to assume. A crack may just look like a minor issue but there may be underlying problems behind it. Any damage on the surface of concrete must not be dismissed as a superficial issue. It is important to know what is really causing the damage and to address that properly. For example, you may just be seeing a crack but underneath, it could be a huge issue with the steel foundation of the concrete slab. 2. Choose the Right SolutionOnce the cause is determined, it would be easy to find the most appropriate fix. There are many different types of solutions when it comes to concrete repair. The crucial thing is to know which one would work best for the damage being dealt with. Concrete coatings St. Louis solutions may work for minor issues, like hairline cracks, but not for large gaps and deep pits. 3. Clean the SurfaceAny repair needs to start with a good cleaning. It is important to apply fixes on a clean surface to ensure that there will be no debris, dirt, or any other stuff that would hinder or weaken the fix being applied. For example, any loose concrete left inside a crack would weaken the adherence of an epoxy filling. The result? The crack can get worse or recur. 4. Do Not RushA quick fix is highly preferable but there are certain concrete repairs that require careful application and long drying or curing time periods. It is important to be patient to make sure that the fix achieves maximum effectiveness or else the damage will just recur. If a product requires three days to completely dry and then another day before it can be used, it is important to follow that strictly. 5. Always Finish Off with a SealerA concrete contractor project in St. Louis usually finishes with a top coat sealer and there is a good reason why. A sealer serves as a protective layer for all types of concrete surfaces. Whether it is a crack repair, a decorative concrete resurfacing, or a stain re-application, a sealer coating can help make the repair last longer. It can even improve the shine of the surface and enhance the vibrancy of colors, especially for concrete stains. There are many different types of sealers. It is highly recommended to seek the assistance of a professional to know what sealer is the most appropriate type to use. Unlike people who get to stay protected from the chilly weather in the comfort of their own homes, driveway concrete remains outdoors, exposed to snow and ice. If not prepped for the season, concrete driveway St. Louis MO could get damaged enough way beyond concrete driveway repair. Here are tips to help home and business owners in protecting their driveways from winter damage. Keep the Concrete Driveway CleanCleaning the driveway regularly even before the winter season helps you see if there are minor cracks or holes on it. Catching damage like these early prevents the need for complex and expensive repairs. If caught early, a concrete driveway resurfacing service can be done instead of a complete concrete driveway installation, which costs more and takes longer to complete. Also, clearing the driveway of debris keeps the path free from anything that could cause holes or pits on the surface when driven on. Apply a Concrete Driveway SealerIf your driveway has not been sealed yet, it should be now. The sealer provides a layer of protection against abrasion, sun exposure, as well as snow and ice. Snow or ice would not be able to penetrate concrete, which is known to be very porous. This way, water would not be able to break down concrete underneath and cause cracks and disintegration. Sealers must be reapplied every 1 to 3 years to keep the surface protected. Check Drainage SystemsMake sure that your driveway is even enough to prevent any puddles forming in the middle. If not sure about this, get in touch with credible concrete driveway contractors who can check this for you. Water that pools on the driveway during winter could solidify into ice and increase the risk of danger for anyone walking or driving on it. Use Sand for Better Concrete Driveway TractionThe most common thing people do to keep driveways from becoming slippery is applying deicing salts on it. It may keep ice from forming but it could induce an expensive concrete driveway cost for repairs. Why? Deicing salts can cause damage to concrete. If you want an alternative to improving traction on a driveway, apply sand on it instead. This aggregate provides an affordable cost for concrete driveway traction without damaging the concrete surface. The First Presbyterian Church in University City, MO was interested in updating the floor where they hold their ceremonies. The area where the seats are previously had linoleum. The church members opted for a stain on the concrete floor. There were several challenges with this project, all of which were pleasantly resolved. The first was that the linoleum had to be removed and the flooring underneath needed a microtopping. They also wanted to incorporate a “prayer walk” feature where they can walk in prayer and meditation. This is essentially a labyrinth and they wanted something that had to be stained with a different color from the seating area. The members had a specific design and measurement in mind which they later changed. Fortunately, our crew leader, who has 15 years of experience in decorative concrete, was there to make the adjustments. Another challenge was when time came for the stain color to be approved. Their leadership board of 100 members was reduced to 10 people. We had to schedule all these 10 people to have a look and have their input as to what stain color would be appropriate. The stain color was adjusted a day later after the leadership board had a closer look but it was easily re-stained to their desired color. The crew took about 12 days to complete the project but the delays were caused by certain adjustments that we had to make to satisfy the church’s members. The linoleum removal and microtopping went smoothly. When the stain approval day came, the leadership board chose the stain color to use on the seating area. We like to have everyone that makes the final decision to be there to approve before we proceed. The crew helped the board decide by comparing stain and labyrinth lines color samples. The prayer walk was very important to the church members because, for them, it symbolizes the journeys of faith and life, so we had to make all measurements, stain colors, and design accurate. The church session was simply amazed at the transformation from linoleum to stained concrete. Their members are also enjoying their new prayer walk. Although there were some delays, our crew was able to complete the work quickly that the entire congregation only got to miss one Sunday service. The best part is that this project garnered two awards during the during the 2016 Sundek Awards. We received the Project of the Year award and the Dealer’s Choice Award.
